What my television set can learn from videogames

People often pick up my Wii Remote trying to change the channel. It’s not a bad idea.

Observe the following evidence.

My new Samsung TV remote:

The Samsung TV remote is probably the ugliest, most over-designed thing I’ve seen in a very long time. To the television industry: there isn’t much differentiation, in the consumer’s mind, between a Samsung 42″ and a Sony 42″. If Apple can sell a mouse based on ease-of-use and functionality, then you can sell a television based on the ease-of-use-of a remote. And if even the Duke of Edinburgh, H.R.H. Prince Philip, is telling you about your bad design (skip forward to 6:55) – you’ve got bad design.

For once, videogames are way ahead.
