Darth Kotick ... I love it. :)

You're right - it's definitely interesting, and it's something that while it shouldn't surprise me, does. Sports games traditional don't score well; EA definitely wasn't kidding when they said they were targeting Metacritic as a benchmark for performance.

Still, I think the scores are misleading - there's a serious disconnect between what the scores actually mean and what the average non-sports-gamer probably thinks they mean (at least, what I would have thought they would have implied). As Daniel's alluding to, I've a fair bit more on this ...

Yeah. The allusion to FIFA in this article and me is that I have serious FIFA-playing problems (I am probably one of the ones that put 200 hours in a year, or close to it), so I'm going to be very interested in how FIFA 10 turns out. FIFA 09 was a serious inroad into making it the best football sim out there, but by all reports, FIFA 10 finally reaches out and makes itself more accessible, rather than the trend towards less so.
There will almost certainly be more thoughts from me as Evan's series on this continues.

It's interesting to see that in the last few days (presumably since this article was written) two sports games have clocked in over 90 on Metacritic: FIFA Soccer 10 and NHL 10. And these are yearly-release sports games - not a category that sees a lot of 9/10 review scores. In fact, if you read the reviews, they sound remarkably similar, down to the modes available: FIFA's "Be A Pro" versus NHL's "Be A GM" (not sure what that stands for, but it's a safe bet it's not Game Master). But that's by the by, since it doesn't seem to have stopped either of them from being excellent games.

The reformation of EA is clearly serious, if it's even affecting the cash-cow EA Sports studio. The evil empire has reformed, just in time for the rise of Activision and Darth Kotick...
