Fraser - that link is amazing. Really interesting to see that this connection was obviously made some time ago. Fascinating stuff. I'd love to see someone write up a real experience of IKEA that way.

Simon B - thanks for dropping by! Nice new blog you've got there: hope it continues to do well.

It is also designed to have a sequel... You discover it just after the last small bag of screws & bold has been opening, revealing the missing one ! Then you'll get new scenario, new gameplay, new enemies, etc. ;)

Anyway, I really enjoy this article and the way it relates game design and Ikea's structure. I will share it all around. Thank for this crazy relation !

I hate Ikea. With a passion. And, I think you may have intentionally or otherwise hit on why I hate it so much - going to Ikea isn't like exploring a free-roaming environment (like Myers), it's like sitting through an entire scripted movie. That's just way too much commitment for someone who just wants to buy a lamp!

Now I just feel tired.

Fraser - awesome link! :)

You may want to make hyperlinks in comments underlined. They're hard to distinguish from normal text at the moment.

I worked in the IKEA restaurant for a couple of years, so that map is very familiar!

I never would have made a game design connection, although, now you say it, there's truth in it. Walking out from the cosy market hall, with its narrow aisles and low ceiling, into the enormous furniture hall, with wide ranks of massive shelves stacked up to the high ceilings, really is like emerging from a dungeon hallway into a boss cave.

IKEA has never quite made a videogame, but it has released an expansion pack. Observe: The Sims™ 2 IKEA Home Stuff.

While searching for that link, I also came across this Trip to IKEA walkthrough/FAQ:

"Whenever you find one of the DREAM BEDROOM ENSEMBLE components, take the purchase tag associated with it; when you have collected all five, the next world will unlock."

"Upon entering the warehouse, you need to go:

N, N, E, N, S, SW, U, N, W, U, W, W, W, U, NW, N, NW, S, E, W, W, W, N, W.

Now you are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike."
